Safe use of the antioxidant ethoxyquin
Start date: 31. July 2016
End date: 31. December 2017
Financed by: The Norwegian Seafood Research Fund
In cooperation with: The Norwegian Seafood Federation, The Marine Ingredients Organisation IFFO, Biomar, EWOS, Skretting, Marine Harvest, Europharma
The project is lead by: NIFES

The antioxidant ethoxyquin (EQ) is an authorised technological feed additive that is added to feed in order to prevent it from becoming rancid. A prerequisite for using additives is that they are safe to use for consumer, farm animal and the environment. In the current reauthorization process of all feed additives in Europe, the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) evaluation on EQ was inconclusive due to lack of data on the safety of ethoxyquin as a feed additive for any target animal, its safety for consumers or the environment. This project attempts to cover the knowledge gaps related to salmon identified by EFSA in their recent risk assessment.

The goal of this project is to study:

  1. the safety of use of ethoxyquin in salmon.
  2. residues and permanence of EQ and its transformation product in edible tissues of salmon.
  3. the potential risks for the consumer from ingesting an ethoxyquin transformation product; ethoxyquin dimer.
