Development of sustainable marine aquaculture in Cuba

In 2010 the Ministry for External Trade and Foreign Investments (MINCEX) in Cuba and The Norwegian Embassy in Havana signed an agreement on the cooperation in developing sustainable marine aquaculture in Cuba. The activity is co-financed by Cuba and Norway. The Norwegian contribution by NORAD is 17 million NOK. The project was initiated in 2011 and are planned to be finalised during 2016. NIFES has been invited by IMR/CDCF to be scientifically responsible for the feed part, and also to make the project coordination by the Norwegian side.


This project aims at the establishment of marine farming of the fish species Cobia (Rachycentron canadum) in the Bay of Pigs in Cuba. Our activity includes selection of a site for the marine cages, production of fry and brood fish, optimisation and production of fish feed, cage operation, marketing of the fish as well as competence building in aquaculture technology and fish health. The project will include student’s programmes on Master and PhD level.
